Organizing Your Vault: Folders, Sorting and Breadcrumbs
A vault with 1 TB of headroom will eventually hold thousands of files. The difference between "usable archive" and "digital junk drawer" comes down to three simple tools: folders, sorting, and knowing where you are.
Folders work like they do everywhere else
Create a folder, name it, drop files into it — nested as deep as you want. A "Photos / 2026 / August" structure behaves exactly like it would on your desktop. Folders themselves are encrypted metadata, not just labels; folder names are never visible to the server any more than file names are.
Renaming and deleting folders works inline: right-click (or use the row's action menu) for Rename, Delete, or Move — no separate settings page to dig through.
Sorting your file list
Click any column header to sort:
- Name — alphabetical, either direction.
- Size — useful for finding what's actually eating your quota.
- Date — newest or oldest first; this is the default view.
Click the same column again to flip the sort direction — an arrow next to the column header shows which way you're currently sorted. For a vault that's grown large, sorting by size is the fastest way to spot the handful of large video files or old exports that are worth moving to a folder or deleting.
Breadcrumbs: always knowing where you are
As you move into nested folders, a breadcrumb trail at the top of the vault shows the full path — "Vault / Photos / 2026 / August" — with each segment clickable to jump straight back up. This matters more than it sounds once you're several folders deep after a search-and-click session; there's no "back" button to hunt for, just click the level you want.
A simple structure that scales
For most people, a flat structure with 5-10 top-level folders (by year, by project, or by category) outperforms a deeply nested one. A few starting points:
| Use case | Suggested structure |
|---|---|
| Personal photo/video archive | Photos / [Year] / [Month or Event] |
| Freelance or client work | Clients / [Client Name] / [Project] |
| Documents and admin | Documents / [Category: Tax, ID, Contracts] |
Whatever structure you pick, folder uploads preserve the hierarchy from your computer automatically — see the upload guide for how that works — so setting up the structure locally first and uploading it wholesale is usually faster than building it folder-by-folder inside the vault.
An archive you can actually navigate.
Folders, sorting, and breadcrumb navigation — all encrypted, all fast, even at a terabyte scale.
