Why Your Google Storage Keeps Filling Up (And What to Do About It)

If it feels like your Google storage fills up faster than the files you're actually putting in Drive would explain, there's a reason: Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos all draw from the same shared pool. It's not three separate storage allowances — it's one, split three ways without you choosing the split.

One quota, three services

Since Google consolidated storage across its consumer products, your total allowance — 15 GB on a free account, more on a paid Google One plan — is shared between everything in your Gmail inbox (including attachments you forgot you received), everything in Drive, and everything in Google Photos. A large inbox with years of email attachments can eat a meaningful chunk of that quota without a single file ever touching Drive directly.

Where the space actually goes

ServiceWhat eats quota
GmailEvery message and attachment you've received or sent, going back years
DriveFiles you've uploaded or created, plus anything shared with you that you've saved a copy of
PhotosEvery photo and video stored at original quality

The Gmail piece is the one people most often forget about — a decade of newsletters, receipts and forwarded attachments adds up, and it's counted against the exact same number as your actual documents and photos.

What happens when you hit the limit

Once you're over quota, new files stop syncing or uploading, and — depending on the service — email delivery and Docs editing can be affected too, since the whole account, not just one feature, is over the shared allowance. The immediate fix Google offers is upgrading to a larger paid tier. That works, but it's treating the symptom: your storage need doesn't shrink because you paid for more room, it just has more room to keep growing in.

Actually addressing it

If you're at the point of actually moving files out, our Google Drive export guide and Google Photos export guide cover the practical steps.
